Are you planning to enjoy vacation South Africa? Then you may wish to visit Port Elizabeth, known as the ?Friendly City? and also sometimes light-heartedly called the ?Windy City?. It was founded as a British town in the year 1820 and civilized by British Settlers, chiefly to work as a shield between the Cape Colony, and the rather aggressive Xhosa tribe. Port Elizabeth is the sister city to Jacksonville and Palm Desert, the two cities of America.

Port Elizabeth is a great destination for the whole family as it has something to do for young and old. You will enjoy the awe-inspiring beaches, a range of water sports, wild life experiences, winding nature trails, heritage buildings, excellent dining and several shopping choices.

The climate in Port Elizabeth is rated the fourth best in the world for coastal destinations. Beautiful beaches grace its coast, and because of the excellent sea conditions and pleasant water temperatures, an increasing number of water activities are being offered. You can try you hand at kite boarding, surfing, sea skiing, wind surfing, scuba diving or jet skiing. If deep sea game fishing is your passion, fishing charters can be arranged with one of the many experienced skippers in the area. Sea safaris are also available should you want to enjoy a sunset cruise, a dolphin experience or whale watching.

Port Elizabeth?s coastal areas are very rewarding for Scuba diving. You can choose between the various shore entries and boat dives. If you choose to dive from the shore, then you have the option of 3 dive sites such as the Postman?s, Devil?s Reef, and the Shark Rock Pier, each of which are between 2m and 8m deep. If you prefer a boat dive, then there are 20 different dive sites, which are between 6m and 40m deep. Four of them are shipwrecks, twelve are the reefs and one among them is a shark dive, called Raggie Sands. Nearly 40 Rag Tooth sharks have been seen here in a single dive. If you can get lessons for diving if you can?t dive. Single day courses are available and gears can be hired from the local dive operators.

There is more to Port Elizabeth than beaches though. For culture and natural history there is no better place than Bayworld. Bayworld is a museum (PE Museum and No. 7 Castle Hill), oceanarium and snake park complex that is located off Beach Road in Humewood. Special needs individuals are catered for and wheelchair access is available in most of the areas within the complex. Dolphin and Seal presentations are held daily and are guaranteed to thrill young and old.

The enthusiastic golfer will find Port Elizabeth a golfer?s paradise. There are no less than five golf courses to choose from within the city?s borders, and many more within easy reach just on the outside. These are Port Elizabeth Golf Club, Shark River Golf Club, Walmer Country Club, Wedgewood Park Country Club and Humewood Golf Club. Humewood is one of the top ten golf courses in South Africa. A true seaside links course, Humewood has exposed fairways, steep faced bunkers, fast and strong greens and thick brush roughs. The course is in excellent condition and never disappoints ardent golfers in search of a challenging game.

Port Elizabeth has great weather most of the year, making it the ideal year round destination. From the beginning of December to around mid January, it gets very busy though due to the South African Schools? summer break. So, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, mid January onwards should prove to be a good time.
