How To Start An Internet Business The Correct Way

by Mike Ledeboer

The advantages of starting an internet business are pretty attractivelucrative potential, low start up costs, flexibility in time and location etc etc. Combine advantages like that with a low barrier of entry, and the result is more internet business options than you can countof which a few are good and many are not.

The resulting flood of business opportunities you could start means you have the difficult task of figuring out which will actually give you a reasonable chance of making any real moneynot easy for anyone without a lot of experience in the industry. To make it even tougher, most of them are not worth your time, money and emotional energy. However, there are a couple good ones, and you can use these 3 guidelines as a start to know what to avoid.

Here are the 3 biggest mistakes people make when starting an internet business:

  1. They focus only on the money. What Im saying is, begin with the end in mind. Seriously consider whether the type of business youre looking to start suits you because its entirely possible to make a lot of money and be MISERABLE. For example, I frequently talk with people who would love to start a restaurant. If they really consider what goes into restaurant ownership " extremely long hours including weekends, high turnover in employees, dealing difficult customers etc. etc. " they might reconsider. Better to think about this now than after you own the restaurant.

  2. They put too much emphasis on the product. This is probably the biggest rookie mistake I see people make. It makes sense on the surface " all we need to do is find the next big thing (ie fountain of youth, iphone, Wii etc), it will sell itself, and we can ride the gravy train to our own version of MTV cribs. Not so much. The reality is, I could drop the cure for cancer in most peoples front yard and they would have no clue how to market or promote it. Thats why its FAR more important to evaluate the marketing system you would use and its ability to train someone who has little experience. Aside from your personal ambition, this is the biggest factor determining whether you succeed in starting an internet business.

  3. They are easily enticed by startups or ground floor opportunities. This is another one that seems to make sense on the surface. The optimistic side of us wants to believe that we found something new and original and that its surely going to be the next Microsoft or Google (and were in on the bottom " woo hoo!). Unfortunately, 95% of businesses fail and that certainly includes those on the internet. What people are really looking for is a company that is on the verge of major growth. Starting an internet business can be intimidating. After helping thousands of people get their home business off the ground, these are some of the most common mistakes Ive seen time and time again.

I frequently get asked what other things people need to know if they are starting an internet business. Frankly, a lot of the principals are the opposite of what you would think if you havent studied the industry. Thats why I compiled a comprehensive checklist of the specific components you will definitely want to verify the business you start has.
